Centennial Awards: Rick Gardner

In our Centennial year, All Souls is honoring members of our church who have contributed greatly to shape how our congregation and community care for each other. On Sundays, we are featuring an honoree, highlighting their service and their meaningful experiences.

Outreach Award

For nearly 20 years, Rick Gardner has facilitated Friday Adventurers, providing a convenient forum for members and visitors to share a meal together in a safe environment and develop friendships, and in some small way contribute to the All Souls welcoming community.  Rick says he has received more joy and happiness than he could have ever given in a lifetime of service.  The All Souls family has given him grace and a wonderful community of friends throughout a new and immeasurably broader progressive spiritual journey.

My involvement is but one way to spread the All Souls love and community family spirit. It has given me the desire to share this marvelous community to a wider audience searching for a home where you don’t have to leave your sense of reason in the parking lot.

—Rick Gardner

In David Brooks’ book The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life, Brooks describes life as a journey consisting of two mountains. The first is the use of our skills and knowledge to ascend our own mountain of objective success. The second mountain is a commitment to others, the yearning to live in service of some greater ideal. Joy is better than happiness, and we receive it when we scale the second mountain or seek a life of caring for others.  All Souls can teach us all to grab our climbing gear and begin to scale the second mountain!

Congratulations to Rick Gardner on the All Souls Outreach Award and everything you do to help spread All Souls’ love throughout the community and beyond.

Do you have a story you’d like to tell?

All Souls is always looking for unique perspectives, stories of our Unitarian faith in practice, community building, and the human experience. We also need volunteers to help us capture church life through photography, videography, editing, storytelling, and AV work. To connect and volunteer in any of these capacities, please email our Director of Communications Bonita James, bjames@allsoulschurch.org.

Become a member of the All Souls family any time online or on Joining Sundays. Joining Sundays are your opportunity to meet with an All Souls minister, ask questions, connect with others who are joining, and become a member of the All Souls family!
